Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic necessarily turned doctors into social media stars. Since then, health professionals from different specialties have become medical influencers on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. And the field of aesthetic medicine is no exception. It is increasingly common, among doctors and aesthetic clinics, to use the Instagram platform to promote aesthetic treatments. Thus, this social network becomes a space where professionals show, describe, explain and encourage these types of procedures. The question we seek to answer in this research is: what are the forms of promotion and dissemination of aesthetic treatments adopted by aesthetic doctors from Mendoza on Instagram? Based on the analysis of four Instagram accounts aimed at promoting aesthetic treatments and four in-depth interviews with the doctors responsible for these accounts, we describe, first of all, why aesthetic doctors decide to use Instagram to promote treatments. aesthetics and the forms of publication and dissemination of aesthetic treatments; secondly, we analyze the forms of promotion and dissemination as an aporetic concatenation of microcelebrity practices, with dilemmas and paradoxical tensions in permanent dispute and negotiation. We conclude that the gradual, “imperceptible” and paradoxical transformations of becoming a medical influencer are part of the processes of normalization of “technological” sociality fostered by the connective ecosystem, the permissibilities of digital technology and the negotiations and disputes carried out by doctors. aesthetics in their practices.
