Since Euripides and Seneca, without forgetting Racine and Garnier, Phedra ́s myth has had a special attraction for art, and their long-standing relationship has been periodically renovated. At the turn of the 19thcentury, the poetry of many, important, artistic sectors –articulated by a remission to the classical code and their opposition to all forms of burgeois art- produced one of the latest versions of the tragedy, Gabriele d ́Annunzio ́s Fedra (1909). I shall focus on some of the cultural key issues related to this Italian playwright ́s text. According to D ́Annunzio ́s introduction of the two characters to the classic repertoire, they reflect a reading of the ancient myth in Nietzschean code.
