Negative biopolitics implies the submission of life to the administration and management of a politics that constantly tries to (re)produce it and that is exerted singularly over female bodies. One of the strategies of biopolitics I explore here is the construction of the figure of the unborn child as one of its regulatory mechanisms. The idea of 'the protection of life'- which focuses on this figure- allows us to visualize the ways in which religious conservative groups try to maintain the status quo of the family institution, of gender roles and of female sexuality and corporality, focusing on ‘life’ as the main signifier around which discourses and practices coalesce and articulate, as they seek and try to preserve the family (and the role of women), or their representation and values, as the basis of social life.
