The following reflections explore how to reflect on the end of century in Neuquén in connection with the protests in Argentina known as the popular uprising of December 2001. Although the dominant image about that period shows new actors and new forms of protest, such as neighborhood assemblies, unemployed movements and workers from recovered factories, other processes also took place in Neuquén. Our hypothesis is that in this province, during the end of the 90s and the beginning of the new century, there was a change in the local activists´ field: the ceramic workers´ experience at Zanón factory acted, among other traditional actors, as a replacement phenomenon of the previous activist generation including new forms, materials and meanings that revitalize the traditional social protests and demonstrations that existed years before. As a result of those events, that tradition of struggle is revived with new meanings. To show this process, we work with concepts such as political culture of protest, replacement of old generations of activists and field of protests.
