Abstract

This text reviews compilations, books, and theses with the aim of providing an overview of the various modalities through which histories of and about Buenos Aires have been understood and constructed. It seeks to restitute their contents, the conditions of their production, and the disciplinary dialogues they engendered. Three chronological and thematic phases are distinguished: first, the anthologies and historiographical texts promoted by the municipality and international cooperation, published on the occasion of two centennials—one marking the city’s founding and the other the arrival of the Spaniards to America; second, an analysis of the production from the 1980s, a period characterized by the post-dictatorial democratic normalization and institutional rebuilding, during which historians, social scientists, and architects reformulated the questions framing urban histories; and third, the theses of architects, which introduce new themes and issues. It is argued that the quest for an urban history, initiated in international debates since the 1960s and revitalized in studies and publications of the 1980s and 1990s, has diminished in centrality amidst a growing plurality of urban studies that incorporate historicity into their analyses.
