This work proposes to think of the museum as a communicational phenomenon based on studies related to the field of communication and museums. For that purpose, two theoretical positions are explored, in which we identify one that gives the museum the status of a means of communication; and another that recognizes the museum as a configuration or multiplatform of interconnected media. The bibliographic selection criterion applied in relation to these studies put two perspectives into dialogue. First, it is developed a trend that marked the field of communication, culture, and the politics of memory, between the seventies and eighties of the 20th century, which accompanied a change in the institutional dynamics of museums, both in Europe and in America. The other line of communication analysis considered began to gain ground from the first decade of the 21st century, and its relevance grew with the increasing use of digital technologies, especially during the pandemic; this was a process to which museums did not remain oblivious. The theoretical revision presented aims to recover a set of definitions whose analysis may allow us to establish criteria to investigate the communicative condition of museums, although it does not contemplate in this instance an approach to the empirical dimension.
