This paper investigates the expansion and recent reconfigurations of doctoral programs in social and human sciences (CSH) in Argentina. To do this, first, some historical antecedents of the doctoral offer are displayed and then, the dynamics of its expansion at the national level are described. Secondly, four case studies of doctoral programs in social sciences located at the National University of La Plata, in the Buenos Aires region of Argentina, are selected in order to investigate the disciplinary and institutional intersections and the different “styles doctoral studies" that characterize them. The methodological approach is qualitative and benefits from the contribution of the documentary analysis, of the data of a survey recently carried out among people with doctorates in CSH in Argentina, and of six in-depth interviews with authorities of doctoral programs in that area, in the frame of a broader research program. In turn, it retrieves quantitative information from government agencies for the analysis of the expansion of doctorates and enrollment. The central argument of the work identifies the existence of various “doctoral styles” in postgraduate programs, configured from the selected criteria, which has incidence on the itineraries of people in training.
