Based on a critical review of bibliographic sources and archival materials, this article explores the historical development of music independence in Argentina. It identi fies three key processes: technological transformation, the long-term impact of the 2001 cri sis and the Cromañón tragedy, and changes in the relationship between independent music, the state, and the market. The article reveals that, over the past twenty years, the notion of independence in music—once a minority stance opposed to the market and the state—has evolved into a more widespread, heterogeneous, and broad concept.
