Archaeological rock surveys and sampling carried out along the Atuel River Basin (southern Mendoza, Argentina) identified potential sources of lithic procurement in three sectors of the basin: mountain range, piedmont, and plain. This paper articulates the information obtained with that previously available on the geological and lithological characteristics of the basin and that from different Late Holocene archaeological sites in the area. The goal is to characterize the regional base of Atuel lithic resources and investigate the modes of procurement, exploitation and circulation of rocks in the region in the past. The results suggest that the regional base influenced the procurement modes in the mountain range and piedmont, while interaction mechanisms, such as the exchange of foreign rocks, intervened in the plain. In addition, the data collected allows the artifactual trajectories of the rocks mostly used in the Atuel sites (i.e., siliceous, obsidian, basalt and rhyolite) to be reconstructed, which is of great relevance for technological studies and the evaluation of different biogeographic models generated for the region.
