This paper analyzes the treatment of trade of energy in the relations of Bolivia with Argentina and Brazil —as a priority issue in both bilateral agendas— and the negotiation processes resulting from the nationalization of bolivian hydrocarbons in 2006. The study is based on the idea that given the convergence of antagonistic schemes in terms of natural gas production/ consumption and current business, the announcement generated the need to agree on new contractual conditions with a prospective outlook beyond political empathy between MAS, FPV and PT administrations. The negotiations were carried out in a context of disparity but they culminated in satisfactory agreements because the actors could be concentrated on the interests of the moment. The article is approached from a qualitative perspective, with documental and statistical information sources and theoretical contributions focused on categories such as small developing economies, great peripheral countries and international negotiations in asymmetric conditions.
