In this paper we present some anthropological contributions to think the mental health field, in the research and intervention fields, and on its edges. We build it linking theory, anthropological field work and experiences of authors in interdisciplinary teams in mental health. In line with Provincial Law 10772 and the National Mental Health Law 26657, we understand the asylum device not only as an institution, but also as a sociocultural model for conceiving and treating illnesses. What can an anthropological gaze open there? We highlight its power to problematize the constructions of the normal/abnormal, the moral/immoral, the diverse, alterity/otherness/sameness, stigmatization processes, as well as those of care. Likewise, we believe that some anthropological tools (attentive listening, exhaustive record and the permanent attempt to link singular aspects with historical-cultural coordinates) allow us to restore the daily dimension of social processes. This implies locating the singular stories as part of a collective plot, highlighting the social, cultural and historical dimensions of the processes of psychic suffering and subjective suffering.
