This paper considers the role of education in the works of Rousseau. The method used is an integrative analysis of the author’s main works, referencing writings usually considered minor, where these prove relevant to understanding the theme of the study. Starting with his concept of education as a lost original state, the educational task has as its goal the construction of a man different from the primitive savage, but also maintaining its essential qualities. Both in his political program and in the essays concerned with a domestic and private model, the adequate construction of man is the fundamental operation on which the possibility to integrate into society without losing freedom rests. However, it is possible to identify a number of contradictions that allow us to say that the different rousseauian models of educations are bound to fail, and produce a new kind of slavery rather than the promised freedom.
