The article analyzes the initial findings and reflections from a university extension project carried out in Córdoba (Argentina) between 2022 and 2024, aimed at participatory documentation of ill-treatment and torture in detention settings and at building the Human Rights in Contexts of Confinement Network. The initiative, driven by teams from the National University of Córdoba in coordination with social organizations and relatives of incarcerated people, is grounded in the Latin American tradition of critical extension and in local activism against institutional violence. We formed an interdisciplinary team seeking to strengthen the participation of social organizations in the production of their own tools to systematize the practices documented. This work contributes to a field where official information is often partial and deficient, within a context of steadily increasing incarceration rates. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of oversight and inspections, the limited access granted to civil society organizations, the instability of preventive policies, and the weak articulation with repressive policies. We aim to contextualize these practices within a prison landscape marked by sustained growth of the incarcerated population, overcrowding, the absence of independent oversight and limited production of official information. We also examine the heterogeneous configuration of the Network, composed of university actors, social organizations, and a small group of relatives and activists whose biographical trajectories shape differentiated expectations, paces, and modes of participation. Drawing on two cases, we discuss the internal tensions within the space, shaped by everyday urgencies, diverse demands, and mismatched temporalities between activism and state bureaucracies. In this article, we are particularly interested in reflecting on the place the Network occupies in a context of growing punitivism, and in questioning contemporary modes of activism and the formulation of claims over life and death inside prisons.
