The semi-rural area under study is located in the Southwest of the Capital city, North-east of Rosario de Lerma municipality and Southeast of the Campo Quijano municipality in the province of Salta. The aim of the present work was to realize a preliminary diagnosis of the microbiological quality of the superficial water used for irrigation, farming, recreation and consumption (with or without treatment). The sampling points were selected according to potential sources of pollution: in the Arenales river, in the irrigation channel, before the potabilization plant and drinking water from the net. The Total (CT) and Fecal (CF) coliforms density was estimated by the method of fermentation in multiple tubes and results are reported as the Most Probable Number (MPN/100 mL). We found that in 66 % of the points, the current pollution exceeds the CT and CF limits established by the legislation for waters for irrigation, recreation and potabilization. The microbiological quality of superficial water is only suitable for such uses at the initial sections of both the channel and the river. The samples of drinking water analyzed exceed significantly the guide values. We suggest later studies to better identify the source and magnitude of the pollution.
