Skull proportions in several species of caviomorph rodents differing markedly in body size were analyzed. As reported for other mammalian orders, the rostral length showed a positive allometry indicating that bigger species have proportionally longer rostra. On the other hand, in-lever and out-lever arms of masseter muscles showed an isometric relationship, indicating a geometric similarity, possibly associated to the basic structural design –bauplan– of the order. Other attributes of the trophic system, such as the width of the mandible and the height of the mandibular condyle, showed a greater degree of morphological variation suggesting the existence of different chewing modes, i.e. propalinal vs. oblique. The structure of the zygomatic arch in the suborder caviomorpha is interpreted regarding functional requirements, and the allometric relationship here depicted.
