Contemporarily, in the educational context, many questions concerning the way in which people directly related to children’s schooling process should act and interact are often dealt with in terms of “participation” (also “parent involvement”). Thus, this article aims to contribute to the historical analysis of this category, displaying and comparing how it is presented and the meanings attached to it in three laws that have significantly influenced the history of the educational system in Argentina: the Law 1.420, the Federal Law of Education and the Law of National Education, also taking into account the place given to children’s families in those laws. We describe the most meaningful articles of these laws regarding this issue, considering their contexts of production and their implication in the ways that the relationship between schools and families has been regulated. So, the comparative analysis of these laws focused on the topics “family” and “participation” shows some continuities and changes in the relations between the state, the schools and the adults in charge of children in the domestic contexts.
