Introduction: The percentage of death "garbage codes"is an effective indicator for evaluating the accuracy of the data on the causes of death, from vital statistics information systems. In Argentina, the levels of this indicator were bad in the first decade of the 21st century. Objectives: To analyze the level and evolution of the garbage codes in Argentina, and the strategies applied to improve their accuracy at the national and subnational levels, between 2009 and 2018. Methods: An observational, retrospective and cross-sectional investigation was developed based on vital statistics. The classification and evolution of the percentages of the garbage codes and by major administrative divisions (provinces), between two triennial periods, were analyzed. Once the provinces with acceptable levels and temporary improvement were identified, an analysis of the strategies implemented in this aspect was carried out. Results: The provinces that registered a good level of accuracy and where the percentage of garbage codes decreased between the two periods implemented between 5 and 7 strategies to deal with the problem. Most of them are low-cost measures and are recommended nationally or internationally. More precisely, in the province, the implemented strategy was legally implemented (compulsory). Conclusions: Determining garbage codes at the subnational level was helpful in identifying internal differentials and identifying good practices that could be shared to improve data accuracy.
