In the context of the exponential growth of football as a global commodity, the achievement and exhibition of a "professional image" is seen as a necessity in the stage of development that women's football is going through in Argentina. Likewise, as an imperative for female footballers in relation to the subordinate position and prejudices that circulate about their supposed "lack of profitability" in this sport. In this article I seek to approach some of the meanings that my interlocutors construct about professionalism, from the point of view of the construction of their own image in the public space and in social networks. For this purpose, I rely on in-depth interviews with a group of First Division soccer players from two clubs in the city of La Plata (metropolitan region of Buenos Aires) and on field observations from my ongoing doctoral research on the process of professionalization of the discipline in the country. The purpose of the article is to visualise some of the transformations that are taking place in this field and to problematise certain implications that the entry into professionalism has on the subjectivities and modes of identification of women footballers.
