The aim of this article is to analyse a series of transformations that impacted the railways in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires after the Once train accident in 2012. To that end, I will investigate the main repercussions for the railways arising from the relationship between modernization, women’s work, and gender politics. I assert that, in a scenario in which the State has become the main railway operator, a range of actions improved the quality of the service for users as well as for the workers. However, from the point of view of those workers, multiple tensions and redefinitions also arose. Furthermore, I show that the new context created fertile ground for a greater influx of women workers to this historically male activity, and for the development of gender and diversity policies. The methodology employed is based on the analysis of the content of in-depth interviews and observation from a micro-sociological perspective, adopting an interpretative approach. In addition, statistic data from the sector are incorporated.
