Usually, the regional convergence analysis uses gross product data at the provincial or state level, which in some cases implies a limitation due to the low number of observations. This is a more serious problem if one seeks to incorporate elements of statistics and spatial econometrics in the analysis, particularly in the case of Argentina at the provincial level. However, for Argentina there is an estimation of GDPs at the departmental level for 1953 and 1959, which in this work is used to apply for the first time in the country this type of analysis considering spatial effects on growth and convergence. In the first part, this article analyzes and compares the geographical clusters that emerge with the levels and the growth rate of the departmental per capita GDPs. In the second part, the results of a standard analysis of beta convergence at departmental level suggest persistence (no significant results). However, when incorporating different alternative spatial effects specifications the results suggest the presence of conditional beta convergence.
