Is it possible to situate us at the crossing of two activities, between research andemployment in public office, in the development of our work as social scientists? Do the characteristics of both practices pose an opposition of interests, languages and purposes that are difficult (when not impossible) to carry on? In this work I try to advance towards these questions based on my own experience in academic fields and in state educational programmes related to the education of indigenous and migrant children and the definition of relevant social knowledge.I maintain that the reflexivity that characterizes social research may be uncovered in certain instances of the state institutions and this allows the introduction oftensions surrounding the meanings of public policies and the doubt about certainas sertions considered incontrovertible truths. In the same way, working in public office may enrich research, as we become situateed in different positions towards social problems, give us more elements to consider the relevancy of the problems we research and allow us get experience closer the logics of functioning of the state. The multiplicity of discourses and policies referred towards the recognizing of diversity that has characterized the last decade in our country together with the use and abuse of anthropological categories and knowledge in the state make this reflection necessary, as a dialogue between our discipline and its multiple uses instate products.
