While there is no theory of State in Laclau’s work, this article recognizes three ways of approaching the phenomenon of state from his perspective: first, a way in which the state is displaced from its habitual dichotomous configuration together with society; the second, where Laclau holds a Gramscian conception of the state, as the hegemonic instance per se; third, the domain where populist logic can prevail. After presenting each of these approaches, reflections are made about some of their implications for understanding the role of the state in emancipatory political processes in Latin America.
