Created by Antonio Berni in 1962, the large-scale collage/assemblage titled La gran tentación presents a variety of technical and photomechanical processes that bring Berni’s work closer to a material history of photography. From “stapled” negatives to the use of graphic printing techniques based on photographic images, through to a “pictorial simulation” of impressions of technical images, Berni’s work highlights an imaginary practice that we could characterize in terms of a photographic topography. This article aims to analyze the different scales and mechanisms through which technical and photomechanical procedures are made present in La gran tentación. The main argument guiding this work suggests that this piece by Berni is not only indebted to the modernist tradition of collage and assemblage but also serves as a piece that highlights the structure and photographic composition in the work of this Argentine artist. Through an analysis of the various techniques used and their different compositional logics, we seek to engage this work with a moment in the history of photography marked by the mass production and consumption of technical images.
