In the need to find interpretation keys’ and routes for overcoming the political challenges in the region, within the agenda of the social sciences, Latin American democracy has historically been one of the most problematized topic and structuring for multiple lines of inquiry. As a starting point or as a result of successive discussions, sometimes overlapping, a series of classification categories have integrated theoretical discourse on democracy, from classic opposites as "liberal/republican" through qualifiers regarding its institutional functioning as "low/high intensity/quality, or conceptualizations more programmatic involving substantive reform projects as "participating and redistributing democracy", reaching today terms like "teledemocracy” or “mediacracy” which underline the growing mediatization of the political practices. As well as the citizenship has occupied a central place in this agenda, the discussion on the conditions for making them possible have formed a nucleus unchanged in such reflections: from this perspective, it is proposed again signifies the current challenges to democracy as a system and to the citizenship as heart of its operational logic, in the frame of some tensions and historical continuities manifested in process of democratic transition in Latin America and also particularly in Argentina.
