this article analyzes the film Opus (donoso, 2006), inscribed in the crevice between documentary and fictional discourses, which allows us to problematize the relationship between film text and context, that is, between fiction and “reality.” at the same time, the question about the actual entity results in new queries, related to how other narratives have been shaped, such as the history of san Juan province, education and the early twenty–first century crisis and, in the midst of both, the construction of the idea of nation. thus, sarmiento’s antinomy “civilization and barbarism” seems like a productive and highly critical category that makes new readings possible, in case of a film text. the article focuses mainly on the way dyad “civilization–barbarism” works as the axis of film’s narrative structure vis–à–vis the uncertain limits between documentary and fictional fields.
