Many students of all educational levels face serious difficulties in understanding the texts they read. In this article, on the basis of the hypothesis that good readers of literary texts are good readers in general, we expose a systematic investigation carried out on the evaluations of a proposal for language teaching based on literary texts. As participating researcher, 47 (forty-seven) mother tongue teachers at primary, secondary, tertiary and university levels in Argentina were interviewed, and they were asked to evaluate the outline of a proposal for language teaching from literary texts. Although this proposal is widely accepted, several teachers consider it little or not at all viable due to the lack of reading competence of the students, which, paradoxically, is the problem that is sought to be solved. The conclusion is that a complete proposal for language teaching based on literary texts could be a fundamental contribution for children and adolescents to develop reading competence and also to experience the pleasure of reading.
