During the first four decades of the 19th century, the model of moral treatment created by Pinel ruled the field of alienism. During this period, inheritance was only a marginal subject for physicians dealing with alienation. The aim of this paper is to suggest an explanation for that. The main elements of Pinel's theory -passions, madhouse, regime- become understandable when located in the matrix that orders them. That matrix is the field called hygiene. This paper shows that for this kind of knowledge a determination such as heredity could never receive a strong relief.
