In January 2024, the Argentine government refused to join BRICS, distancing itself from a development proposal promoted by the Global South. BRICS offers projects, investment, and specialized knowledge as an alternative to scientific-technological development, aiming to generate economic benefits and strengthen the region. This paper aims to analyze how participation in this bloc, focused on science and technology, could influence development opportunities for Argentina through cases of financing, innovation policies, and educational projects led by China. Three key cases were selected. First, the financing of the New Development Bank for innovation projects. Second, Xi Jinping’s proposal to prioritize “quality productive forces” and the role of higher education in the development strategy evidences how policies aimed at improving education and research promote technological progress and long-term sustainability. Finally, it examines the Xiamen Innovation Center of the BRICS Partnership for the New Industrial Revolution, illustrating how international collaboration can foster research and technology and its impact on the capabilities of member countries. It highlights the strategic value of the BRICS in scientific and technological development and the potential losses to the BRICS.
