When comparing the histories of sociology in Brazil and Argentina during the Twentieth Century, strong diferences can be perceived. While in Argentina, coinciding with the more general national history, its development took the shape of a conflicted succession of very divergent periods, in Brazil, in contrast, its trayectory is characterized by a relative estability and, even though there were profound inflexions and failed projects, there is a certain continuity and progressive institutionalization. This articule seeks to analise the process of institutionalization of sociology as an academic discipline and as a public discourse in Brazil and Argentina from a compara tive perspective. The comparison is structured by three analytical dimensions: 1) the disputes around the legitimate definitiuon of sociology and the grade of consensus amongst sociologists with diferent orientations about the rol of the discipline; 2) the relationship between sociology and the State (and the political and social elites who controlled it); 3) the insertion, participation and recognition of sociologists in the intellectual field and the public sphere.
