About 200 fish species inhabit the area located from the mid Paraná river to the estuary of Río de la Plata; many of them have an important economic value, and with migratory circuits throughout this area. The aim of this paper is to compare some aspects of the ichthyoarchaeological record generated by pre-hispanic populations which settled in four different places in the lower del Plata Basin during the late Holocene: 1) the floodplain located in southern Chaco Province/ northeast Santa Fe Province; 2) the southern sector of Paraná floodplain, near the city of Rosario; 3) the bajíos ribereños sector, in the northeast of Buenos Aires Province, and 4) the floodplain of the Uruguay river, southeast of Entre Ríos Province. The ichthyoarchaeological record shows that human groups settled on the shores of these main water courses during the late Holocene (with economies mainly focused towards hunting and gathering) exploited these resources, although in a variable fashion.
