In this paper we propose an interpretation of the ideal of educational equality in tension with the problem of difference, from a Philosophy of Education approach. It explores the ways in which the claim of equalizing has been linked with the question of otherness, from the origins of modern educational systems to the contemporary context in which diversity appears to be held as a value in education. In this framework, we take the input from the thought of Emmanuel Levinas, to find new ways around educational equality, thinking it otherwise, from a consideration of ethics as first philosophy.
