This article configures a letter category as a relevant notion to the visual poetry study field. We start to define this notion studying their occurrence in the work of Jacques Lacan, Jacques Derrida and Jean François Lyotard. In line with these authors, we establish displacements and transformations of the “letter” category. In order to associate their theoretical importance, we work on the etymological senses, and thus we consider the incidence of the significant in the esthetic procedures. As a reference, we revised the linguistic value model inaugurated by Ferdinand de Saussure. Then we determined the relationship between the “letter” category with the “non referential aesthetic sign” model in Rosalind Krauss’ theory.
