This study offers a critical review of 49 research articles about literacy in pre-service teacher education of English-speaking countries, published between 1985 and 2010, in sixteen international scientific journals examined. Analysis of these papers allowed us to identify four broad themes: 1) pre-service teachers lite- racy conceptions and practices, 2) teaching how to teach reading and writing in the disciplines 3) the role of reading and writing in student teacher’s practicum, and 4) institutional projects to transform lecturers´ literacy beliefs and teaching practices in this educational level. Through summarizing the results and contri- butions of the publications in regards to these four themes identified, we intend to offer relevant information to compare local problems and results with English-speaking countries, as well as to contribute to teacher educators’ reflection about the roles reading and writing play in teaching and learning in pre-service teacher education.
