In a both critical and exploratory way, an anthropological perspective brings into play the concept of aesthetics so as to shed light upon different aspects of the Pilaga (Argentina) musical practices. The argument is structured upon three questions: What kind of aesthetics utterances emerge in Pilagá discourses concerning their music and that of the White society?, Do these utterances have their origins in different aesthetic conditionings?, and to what extent do they emerge from the specificity of Pilaga culture or rather from the adoption and redefinition of White society’s aesthetical orientations? On the one hand, these questions help us to recognize the existence of a Pilaga musical aesthetics. On the other, they lead to the undermining of a rather traditional concept of aesthetics as it is employed in transcultural studies.
