In this article, I address one of the analytical problems regarding the ethnographic treatment of “creativity” in relation to social change. I consider, specifically, the implicit tension between “the new” and “the old” that this notion bears. Through an ethnographic and comparative analysis of several cases and examples, I try to find some unity in a diversity of situations, relations and processes in which different groups dispute the definition of what is “new”, what would be, in consequence, “old” and why. What all the cases and examples have in common is the conviction that some kind of situations, relations and / or processes should be changed because they are considered as socially problematic. For example: the distortion of reality through mass media, how to lend money to poor people so they can get out of their condition, or how to deal with water scarcity.
