Many researchers have focused on the important role that the recent past has played in Néstor and Cristina Kirchner’s presidential speeches. Specially, both NK and CFK’s administrations were characterized by an agenda focusing on political memory concerning the last dictatorship (1976-1983) in Argentina, and the claim for memory, truth and justice. In this paper, we will focus on CFK’s commemorative speeches about the Malvinas War, which took place in 1982. We will study the narrative sequences in which the former President tells her own experience of the war, when she lived in the southern city of Río Gallegos. We think that in these speeches she presents herself as a surviving witness of the armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom. We also argue that the personal memory is intimately related to the evocation and the construction of collective memories. We specifically identify two discursive strategies: on the one hand, the remembrance of CFK’s private life evocates the national memory about the claim for justice for the disappeared; on the other hand, the configuration of a collective memory of Malvinas War evocates CFK’s private life and political career.
