In this work I introduce a set of issues regarding criminal profiles usage in order to limit police discretion in the sphere of decision about control/detainment/arrest in public space. In the context of the Provincia de Córdoba this sphere has been put under public and institutional scrutiny in virtue of several events that have taken place in recent years. I propose that an approach to this issue should, to my mind, explore three different questions. First, a conceptual question regarding the notion of discretion and the notion of criminal profile. Second, an empirical question regarding implementation, i.e., how criminal profiles should be used in concrete cases and how statistics supporting those profiles should be construed. Third, a normative question about which kind of actions (or institutional reaction) may be justified on the basis of a criminal profile. I focus here on the first two.
