In this paper, we explored the relationships that human societies established with their environment during the Formative Period in Pampa del Tamarugal (3,000-1,000 BP), Atacama Desert. This was accomplished through a theoretical-methodological perspective that emphasizes the potential of the archaeobotanical, zooarchaeological and ecofact record. By mediating between humans and environment, that information provides a better understanding of the relationship about nature and culture forged by these societies. Our purpose is to demonstrate that this process was part of a long history of experiences and rationalization of the territory, its resources and the own conceptions that the Formative communities made of them. Therefore, we propose that the human intervention in Pampa del Tamarugal can be understood not only as an ecological and economic change, but also a "cosmological" one
