This is the first study of the Laguna del Diamante area (3300 masl) focused on the analysis of lithic technological organization. Two obsidian sources with distinct chemical signatures and variable temporal and spatial distribution have been identified in the area: Arroyo Paramillos and Laguna del Diamante. The work investigates, from a synchronic and diachronic perspective, strategic aspects of human occupation over the last two thousand years, based on the study of the lithic record of three archaeological sites (LDS2, LDS4, and LDS13). The lithic record was modeled into six chronological phases, and the reduction sequences of 369 obsidian artifacts were analyzed, which were assigned using various geochemical methods. The first phase (~2040 – 1280 cal years BP) shows a low intensity of occupation and a majority use of the Arroyo Paramillos source. In phase IV (1210 – 1200 cal years BP), a high intensity of occupation and a majority use of the Laguna del Diamante source are observed. These indicators suggest that an effective occupation of space would have occurred. Phase VI (500 - 440 cal years BP) has the highest intensity indices of all phases and the greatest diversity of non-local obsidian sources.
