The paper analyzes artistic practices related to circus, tango-dancing and carnival arts in Buenos Aires from the period of post-dictatorship and the democratic transition that begins in Argentina in 1983. In particular, we address different narratives that describe this period as a time of “resurgence” of these popular genres through new spaces for public participation that had been forbidden by the military government. We argue that while there can be common aspects in this process of “revival” each of these popular genres is characterized by the development of a specific cultural formation. In this regard, we consider these cultural formations in relation to the socio-political context that frames them, while we highlight some similarities observed between seemingly very different cultural formations.
