This article describes and analyzes the entry and participation of women in the Argentine labor market between 1947 and 1974. Methodologically, drawing on official sources—specifically population and economic censuses—it reconstructs the evolution of female participation (both overall and by sectors and branches of activity) and its characteristics within the political and economic context of the period. The central hypothesis is that women’s entry into the labor market was explained primarily by the growth of the commerce branch within the tertiary sector of the economy. In conclusion, the study reveals that female employment in the tertiary sector displayed a distinctive dynamic, initially driven by commerce and later by the service sector. In doing so, it addresses a historiographical gap by identifying the branches in which this incorporation occurred most easily.
