The article discusses a process commonly known as militarization, involving a growing intensity of violence (depending on the use of force against persons) and reorienting it towards confrontation with the state. Affirms that the recurrence (not the inevitability) and the huge variety of modalities taken by this process, shows the partial nature of the explanations focused on static dichotomies of ideas that lead to failure (militarists “focos”) or success (political “OPM”) or limited to circumstances. It proposes instead that these are situations that stress the armed organizations as political actors, and posed dilemmas against which organizations give very different answers, which demonstrate the importance and complexity of processes that separate the ideas of the concrete forms of action aimed at changing historical circumstances.
