This study examines the evolution of Argentina’s Quality of Life Index (ICV) from the first national census in 1869 to 2022. The ICV, derived from census data, integrates socioeconomic (education, health, housing) and environmental dimensions to provide a multidimensional and spatial measure of well-being. Over 150 years, the index reveals a general improvement in living conditions but also a persistent structural territorial inequality. Since the nation’s formation, a clear center–periphery pattern has prevailed, with higher values in the Buenos Aires–Pampas corridor and lower ones in the northern regions. Although progress in education and health has been significant, regional disparities have remained stable. Recent censuses indicate slight convergence, yet the historical geography of inequality endures. The ICV thus serves as a valuable geographical tool to understand the spatial structure of well-being and the relationship between territory, society, and the state throughout Argentine history.
