The use of self-report measures, widely distributed in Psychology, has been criticized on several occasions. The aim of this study was to characterize self-report measures, indicating their advantages and disadvantages in both basic and applied Psychology. Regarding the advantages of these measures, we highlight (among others) their versatility, their practicality, the easiness of response processing, their low cost and time savings, and the access they give to introspective information and extensive samples. Regarding its disadvantages, we highlight the problems associated with its validity and objectivity, the low correlations with behavioral measures, the possible lack of motivation (conjunctural and structural) of the participants for responding, the possible biases and the social desirability. Knowledge of the advantages and limitations of these assessment tools is essential to make better methodological and professional decisions.
