In this article, I analyze the “meaning turn” and its ambiguities in the perspective of Anthony Giddens, through the concept of mutual knowledge. With this turn, the author elaborates a unified and multidimensional theory, in which the meaning is the “condition of possibility of the social”. So, he comes up with certain theoretical “statements”, crossed by key ambiguities. The first one refers, from the term “meaning”, to the relationship between meaning and significance: between “knowing how” to act and “talking about” these agencies. The second refers to the connection between rules (both semantic and moral) and resources (linked to power), that is, between communication, legitimation and domination. Then, I track how the author emphasizes, in the second stage of his work, practical consciousness (other than discursive) and the situated character of agency, although this does not avoid the ambiguities mentioned.
