The main goal of this paper is to present an inquiry into the role of Enrique François in the teaching of language and literature at University of Buenos Aires. Specifically, we will study the history of the chair of Linguistics in a period yet to be fully explored: the one that started immediately after the leave of absence of Amado Alonso, head of the Institute of Philology and the chair of Romance Linguistics, in 1946. The ten years that followed his departure represented a new moment in the institutionalization of Philology and Linguistics; and the decisive agent in the formation of the field that took over the management of the Institute and the only chair of Linguistics in the entire university was Enrique “the french Evil” François. We aim to reconstruct the academic biography of this agent of the subfield of linguistic studies, as well as his disciplinary and political standing between 1946 and 1955. To do so, this paper will study the documents that show his academic path and the academic syllabuses of Classical Linguistics (1946-1947) and Linguistics (1948-1955) at the University of Buenos Aires. We will also lay out, as an Annex, the transcripts of said syllabuses.
