The aim of the article is to identify and to specify some philosophical relationships between Dewey's ideas on democracy and education, considering the role played by the latter within the process of building a democratic way of life. Firstly, I will address the complex sense of democracy as an ideal of community life, identifying philosophical conditions -related to a common and shared core of values- as well as political conditions. Secondly, I will recover the diagnosis presented by Dewey with respect to the state of generalized political apathy, a state that poses serious challenges to the full development of the community. Thirdly, I will explain why Dewey considers that education is the best way to reverse political apathy and why, at the same time, democracy is a reference and a condition of possibility for the full development of education. Finally, I will state some ideas for future research about the central role of planning educational activities that include content about attitudes and values, so as to put some of Dewey's idée into practice.
