Social class, experience, and individualization constitute three key terms in the analysis of contemporary Western societies. This article examines their connections and tensions in the efforts to imagine social structure and mobility, as well as in processes of self- classifications among subaltern sectors in Greater Buenos Aires. To this end, we underscore the hermeneutic potential currently entailed by a series of shifts affecting certain terms —such as “collective” and “referent”— in establishing the conflicts that organize social life and the sequential transformations in both interpretations of the State and political options that take shape. In doing so, we seek to point out some of the dimensions in which the contemporary crisis of legibility and understanding of the social world is manifested.
