In order to reflect on the concepts and modes of thought required to critically interpret the current Argentine ideological juncture, the article re-reads some concepts and figures that in recent years sought to problematize in various ways the dichotomy “democracy or authoritarianism”, simultaneously producing a displacement of the idea of “authoritarianism” towards the ideas of “dictatorship”, “terror” and “dedemocratization”. In this sense, we analyze the concepts of postdictatorship and “right-wing life” proposed by Silvia Schwarzböck; the understanding of democracy as an internally conflictive process of democratization/dedemocratization recovered by Álvaro García Linera; the conceptualization of neoliberalism as “controlled precariousness” of life proposed by Judith Butler, and the idea of terror as the consummation of capitalist anti-humanism supported by Horacio González. As we understand them, these texts reopen an ancient debate about the styles of critical thinking and the potentials/limitations of the dichotomies that make up our language. This debate not only constitutes an invaluable legacy of national essayism in which it meets a certain European dialectical tradition, but today it is also theoretically and politically crucial in the face of the emergence of socially hegemonic discourses in which the difference between democracy and terror tends to dilute.
