In our country there are nowadays a number of studies on the origins and development of business corporativism in different industry areas. We still know little, however, about the process of professionalization in the field of construction and its peculiarities in different urban centers. Within the issue of business associations, it is important to inquire about strategies, demands and interests of small and medium Argentine enterprises. In a touristic city such as Mar del Plata, the construction activity was set as one of the masterpieces of the local economy. Although it is similar to other urban places, the demands imposed by tourism encouraged a particular development of the elements of the economic system. This paper analyzes the rise of an employer sector (Centro de Constructores y Anexos) with its proper features in the first half of the twentieth century, considering its organizational structure, origin, strategies and job regulation.
